Overview
Sanctum Sunnyside is a legacy mountain residence set within the historic landscape of Telluride, Colorado—where the rugged spirit of a former mining town meets the refinement of a world-class alpine destination. Designed by Tommy Hein Architects, the home draws inspiration from the enduring structures of Telluride’s boom-town past, reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural lens that is both restrained and deeply connected to place.
At the core of the design is a philosophy rooted in harmony—between structure and site, form and feeling. Tommy Hein approaches architecture as a vessel for experience, guided by a Taoist sensibility that prioritizes the unseen: the flow of energy, the rhythm of movement, and the quiet power of the spaces within. Every line, material, and proportion is considered in response to the land, allowing the home to emerge organically from its surroundings.
Craftsmanship and stewardship define the process. Through close collaboration with clients, consultants, and artisans, the design unfolds with clarity and intention—balancing innovation, sustainability, and timeless alpine character. Natural light, spatial openness, and a refined material palette create an environment that feels both grounded and expansive.
In collaboration with R&L Design Co., the interiors extend this vision through an organic palette of wood, stone, leather, and textiles—crafting a warm, textural retreat that reflects how people gather, rest, and live within the alpine landscape.
Sanctum Sunnyside is not simply architecture—it is living art shaped by purpose, connection, and the spirit of the mountains.
